How To Care For A Pregnancy With High Blood Pressure

Pregnancy with high blood pressure requires special care for both the mother and the fetus. Some women can control high blood pressure through diet and exercise, by reducing salt intake and oil, and with medication. However, the question really is, Is pregnancy with high blood pressure safe? The answer for most women is, Yes, it is. However, prenatal care is essential and you need to know a few more things.
The effects of high blood pressure during pregnancy can be mild to severe. Although some pregnant women with high blood pressure have healthy babies, high blood pressure in general can harm the mother kidney or other organs or may cause premature delivery. The newborn child can be underweight too.
Types Of Pregnancy With High Blood Pressure
There are mainly three different types of high blood pressure during pregnancy.
1. Chronic hypertension: When high blood pressure develops before 20 weeks of pregnancy or lasts more than 12 weeks after delivery. Often, it happens that chronic hypertension was present, but not detected, before pregnancy.
2. Gestational hypertension: When high blood pressure develops after 20 weeks of pregnancy and usually disappears after delivery.
3. Preeclampsia: A serious condition characterized by increased blood pressure and protein in the urine after 20 weeks of pregnancy. If left untreated, Preeclampsia can lead to serious, even fatal complications for both mother and the baby.
If you are planning to get pregnant, you must consult your doctor. If you are already pregnant, you should again keep in touch with your doctor for he will check your weight and blood pressure on a regular basis. If you are a patient of pregnancy with high blood pressure, you should carefully observe the following symptoms
Headaches
Blurred vision or sensitivity to light
Abdominal pain
Nausea or vomiting
Decrease urine output
Sudden weight gain
If you face any of the above signs, immediately talk to your doctor about it. If you are taking any medicine, your doctor should know about that as well. Any medication taken during pregnancy can affect the baby, however if medication is needed, the doctor will prescribe the safest medication at the most appropriate dose.
Although, high blood pressure and related disorders during pregnancy can have serious repercussions, most women have successful pregnancies even though they develop Preeclampsia. Along with the precautions given by your doctor, it is very important that you keep yourself happy and engaged in activity. You should enjoy the changes that occur during these nine months and record your pregnancy week by week in a pregnancy journal. You should remain relaxed especially during the last trimester. Get high on being pregnant not on your blood pressure!

High Blood Pressure and Its Treatment

If the pressure at which the blood flows through your arteries is more than normal then it is called high blood pressure.

Normally the blood pressure is 120/80. Systolic blood pressure is the higher value 120. This is the pressure at which the blood is pumped by the heart. The diastolic blood is 80. This is the pressure when the heart relaxes. If the blood pressure is 140/90 or more, then you are said to have hypertension or high blood pressure

Compact blood pressure monitoring equipment is available. It consists of a cuff, which is tied round your hand. You have to inflate the cuff with air by squeezing a bulb. Electronic blood pressure monitors automatically inflate the cuff. The instrument gives two readings which show the diastolic and systolic blood pressures.

Your blood vessels might be damaged by high blood pressure. This in turn may damage your heart and kidney. High blood pressure may also cause heart attack or stroke.

Treatment to high blood pressure starts with a change in life style.

• Stop smoking and the use of any tobacco product.

• Regular exercise is an absolute must.

• Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits. Avoid eating saturated fats.

• Cut down the intake of salt and alcohol.

• Relaxation techniques such as meditation would be of great help.

Consumption of alcohol might increase blood pressure in some people. If this is the reason you should avoid alcohol. Stress is also said to affect blood pressure. You have to find out methods to relax in consultation with your doctor.

Various types of drugs are prescribed for hypertension. They include diuretics, alpha blockers and beta blocker. Certain other varieties of drugs include calcium channel blockers and ACE inhibitors.

There are also various other treatments for hypertension

Some natural remedies for hypertension are

• Eating papaya every day on empty stomach

• Eating garlic cloves.

• Taking honey

• Take Amla or Indian gooseberry every day

Mild Medications for High Blood Pressure – Understanding the Available Medications

Many individuals are put on medications to control their high blood pressure. Depending greatly on the severity of the blood pressure you might be able to discontinue using the medications with some modifications to your lifestyle and diet. Many doctors will begin a medicinal treatment with mild medications for high blood pressure and sometimes it might be necessary to start off with a more vigorous medication and slowly work down to a mild one.Understanding the different types of medications and how they actually treat and benefit the condition is important. Throughout this article you will learn the medications that are used for treating high blood pressure and gaining control over it. Generally, all of the medications that are currently being used for the successful treatment of high blood pressure fall into one of five categories. The category or type of medication your doctor will put you on will greatly depend on a few factors. Among them are the level of high blood pressure you have, existing medical conditions, current medications you take as well as family medical history. Here are the categories:* Vasodilators* Diuretics* Angiotensin II receptor blockers and ACE inhibitors * Calcium channel blockers* Beta-adrenergic blocking agentsLet’s start off by discussing the Vasodilators. These are designed to make the veins and the arteries wider, thus allow the blood to flow a bit more freely. In some circumstances a doctor might prefer to combine another medication with a Vasodilator to get your blood pressure to the ideal level and maintain it.ACE Inhibitors is the next medication we will briefly discuss. These are among the most popular medications prescribed for treating and stabilizing blood pressure. These are designed to successfully relieve the stress of blood vessel contraction as well as regulate the blood flow and decrease the blood pressure. ACE inhibitors will then convert the hormone that is usually inactive into an active hormone. The next medication is the Calcium Channel Blockers. These decrease the blood pressure because they relax the blood flow and the vessels themselves. The blood generally is able to flow with ease once the medication gets into the individuals system. The relaxation enhances the flow of the blood without stressing the heart.Beta blockers or Beta-adrenergic blocking agents are often the first choice for many doctors in treating high blood pressure. Basically, this type of medication will minimize the stress on the heart by limiting the work that is needed to be done by the heart. The number of beats the heart has to do to make sure the blood is pumping is lowered because the heart no longer has to work as hard. This also decreases the intensity of the heartbeats, thus combining all of this the blood pressure is often successfully modified and reduced to a healthy level.Mild medications for high blood pressure will be determined generally on an individual patient basis. The prescribing doctor will take into consideration several other health related issues before prescribing the best medication for your blood pressure. Be sure you are giving as much information to your doctor as you can about your medical history and your family medical history.

Choosing Meditation to Lower High Blood Pressure? New Research Reveals Which Meditation is Most Effective

A new scientific research study conducted at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine provides further evidence that people with high blood pressure can find relief through meditation—but the study also found that not all forms of meditation are equally effective. The study compared findings from research on several well-known types of meditation and relaxation practices, and found that the only mind/body practice that produces significant changes in blood pressure is the Transcendental Meditation technique.

According to a definitive new meta-analysis of 107 previous studies on stress reduction programs and high blood pressure, published in the American Journal of Hypertension (Vol. 21, 3: 310-316), the Transcendental Meditation technique was found to produce a statistically significant reduction in high blood pressure—an effect not found with other forms of relaxation, meditation, biofeedback or stress management.

Significant Reductions in Blood Pressure

The new meta-analysis reviewed randomized, controlled trials published in peer-reviewed scientific journals over the past decades concerning stress reduction and relaxation methods used by participants with high blood pressure. Blood pressure changes through the Transcendental Meditation technique included average reductions of 5.0 points of systolic and 2.8 points of diastolic blood pressure, changes which were statistically significant, according to the review. These changes associated with Transcendental Meditation practice were consistent with other controlled studies showing reductions in cardiovascular risk factors, improved markers of heart disease, and reduced mortality rates among participants in the Transcendental Meditation program.

Transcendental Meditation “equivalent to adding a second hypertensive agent”

“The magnitude of the changes in blood pressure with the Transcendental Meditation technique are at least as great as the changes found with major changes in diet or exercise that doctors often recommend,” said Dr. James Anderson, principal author of the study. “Yet the Transcendental Meditation technique does not require changes in lifestyle. Thus many patients with mild hypertension or prehypertension may be able to avoid the need to take blood pressure medications—all of which have adverse side effects. Individuals with more severe forms of hypertension may be able to reduce the number or dosages of their BP medications under the guidance of their doctor.”

Dr. Anderson stated further: “Adding Transcendental Meditation is about equivalent to adding a second hypertensive agent to one’s current regiment, only safer and less troublesome.”

Reduced Risk of Heart Attack and Stroke

Anderson added that long-term changes in blood pressure of this magnitude are associated with at least a 15 percent reduction in rates of heart attack and stroke. “This is important to everyone because cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death in the U.S. and worldwide,” Anderson said. The study’s biostatistician, Maxwell Rainforth, assistant professor of Physiology and Health Statistics at Maharishi University of Management, said the meta-analysis used state-of-the-art statistical methods to review 107 published studies in the field of stress reduction, relaxation and blood pressure. “The twenty-three separate studies included in the final analysis met well-known criteria for high scientific quality. That is, these studies used repeated blood pressure measurements and participants were randomized to either a stress reduction technique or placebo-type control for at least eight weeks. The data we used are all published in peer-reviewed scientific journals,” Rainforth said.

Side Benefits of TM vs. side effects of drugs

According to Dr. Robert Schneider, director of the Institute of Natural Medicine and Prevention and co-author, this rigorously conducted meta-analysis indicates that the Transcendental Meditation technique is distinctively effective compared to other scientifically studied techniques in lowering high blood pressure. “For those 100 million Americans with elevated blood pressure, here is a scientifically documented, yet simple and easy way to lower blood pressure without drugs and harmful side effects. In addition, related studies show an integrated set of positive ’side benefits,’ such as reduced stress, reduced heart disease levels and longer lifespan with this technique to restore balance in the cardiovascular system, mind and body,” Schneider said.

Overturns a previous study on meditation

The new meta-analysis was co-authored by researchers at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, in Louisville, and at the NIH-funded Institute of Natural Medicine and Prevention at Maharishi University of Management in Iowa.

According to Dr. Anderson, the findings of this new study rebut a July 2007 report sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and the NIH-National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, which concluded that most research on meditation is low quality and found little evidence that any specific stress reduction effectively lowers blood pressure.

The new meta-analysis identified all high quality meditation studies published through 2006 and rigorously analyzed their results, which the previous government report failed to do. Anderson said the new meta-analysis includes only high quality studies on all available stress reduction interventions. The studies on the Transcendental Meditation technique were conducted at five independent universities and medical institutions, and the majority of them were funded by competitive grants from the National Institutes of Health.

7 Natural Ways To Lower High Blood Pressure

If you’ve been diagnosed with high blood pressure or even pre-hypertension, you might want to look at some natural ways to lower high blood pressure before you turn to traditional medications. With that in mind, I’ve put together a list of 7 natural ways to help you regain control of your blood pressure. 1. Add Tomatoes To Your DietIt’s the lycopene in tomatoes that are effective at lowering your blood pressure. This was the conclusion of a study done by Dr. Esther Paran, head of the hypertension division of Soroka Medical Center, in an Israeli study. Adding tomatoes to your diet can reduce systolic blood pressure by 10 points and diastolic pressure by 4 points according to the study. The recommended quantity is four tomatoes a day. Look for opportunities to get them into your diet regularly. Salads, sauces, and tomato juice will all do the job. Even a tomato supplement can work. 2. ExerciseThough it may take several months before you see the results, studies have found that aerobic exercise that involves the large muscles is an effective way to lower high blood pressure. In fact, the studies indicate that exercise can reduce your systolic blood pressure by 11 points and diastolic pressure by 9 points.3. Eat Low Fat FoodsA well balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and low fat dairy products should make up the majority of your eating plan. Eating foods low in saturated fats, low in total fat, and low in cholesterol can reduce your blood pressure as much as taking a blood pressure medication.4. Try AcupunctureAccording to one recent study, when a low level electrical stimulation was applied at specific points on the front legs of rats, they experienced a drop in blood pressure. This study sets the stage for large-scale trails on humans, but in the meantime, since acupuncture is considered benign and harmless, you maybe want to consider giving it a try. It appears that electro acupuncture is slightly more effective, though both manual and electro acupuncture have demonstrated immediate and prolonged reductions in high blood pressure.5. Try YogaYoga exercises, called asanas, involve stretching the muscles and joints and holding the body in various positions. During these movements any tightness or tension observed in your body is consciously relaxed. The most efficient asanas for lowering blood pressure are the forward bends, which have a pacifying effect on the brain, the nervous system, the blood circulation to the brain, and they also help you reduce the stress. All these lower blood pressure. Furthermore, these asanas slow down the pulse rate, so they lower blood pressure.6. Add A Little Red WineA glass or two of red wine contains the flavonol resveratol, which is an antioxidant that protects your arteries against the damage done by free radicals and also assists in preventing the hardening of your arteries. Flavonol is active in stopping your platelets from bunching together. A glass of red wine helps to keep your blood flowing smoothly through your arteries and improves your artery linings. When your arteries dilate properly, your blood pressure comes down.7. Reduce That CaffeineIn one study, it was found that five cups of coffee per day can mildly increase the blood pressure. So while you don’t have to kick your coffee habit completely, reducing your intake to only three cups a day can have positive results. There are other ways to lower high blood pressure, but these should get you started on the right path. As always, consult with your physician before making any health changes in your life.
